Next week, a new Indian film titled “GDN” is set to release. The movie is based on the extraordinary life of Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu (G.D. Naidu), one of the greatest personalities in recent Indian history.
Known as the “Edison of India,” G.D. Naidu was a visionary inventor, industrialist, and philanthropist. He is widely regarded as the father of Coimbatore’s industrialization.
G.D. Naidu built India’s first electric motor and also developed the country’s first indigenous automobile. However, the Indian government refused to grant him a license to manufacture cars, preventing his innovation from reaching mass production.
If you’ve never heard of him before, that’s not surprising.
The film’s tagline says it all: “Feared by the British… Forgotten by his own people.”Even today, G.D. Naidu remains relatively unknown outside the Coimbatore region, but this film has the potential to change that.
Starring R. Madhavan in the title role, the film has been made in Tamil and will also be dubbed into Telugu, Hindi, and several other Indian languages.
Let us all hope that this inspiring film, which brings to light the remarkable life and struggles of the often-overlooked hero G.D. Naidu, becomes a grand success.
