KARA: A gripping heist drama( 3/5)
Dhanush acted in a period crime-action drama titled, KARA set around the 1991 fuel crisis backdrop. Directed by Vignesh Raja, the movie has Mamitha Baiju as the female lead and is out for public viewing on April 30, 2026. Let’s Review KARA.
Synopsis:
Karasami (Dhanush) knows nothing other than breaking locks, scaling walls, and committing thefts. In his youth, he steals money from his father and runs away from home. He later marries Valli (Mamitha Baiju).Claiming it to be his final job, Karasami attempts to rob an MLA’s house. DSP Bharathan (Suraj Venjaramoodu) takes up this case personally. However, Karasami assaults the DSP and manages to escape.After this incident, Karasami quits theft completely and starts working in a hotel along with Valli. He dreams of opening his own hotel, but struggles to find the money to make it happen.When Karasami approaches a bank for a loan, he is asked to provide surety and property documents. With no other option, he returns to his native village to claim the 8 acres of farmland he owns.
However, the entire village is already struggling under financial distress, unable to repay loans and mounting interest taken from the bank. Kandasami (K. S. Ravikumar), who treats the land as his very life, has also taken a loan from Panchavan Union Bank.After many years, when Kandasami realizes that his son has returned not to see him but for the land and money, he is overwhelmed with grief and passes away. His final wish is to be buried in his own farmland. But the bank officials refuse to allow it, arguing that the land has been seized and questioning how a body can be buried on confiscated property.
What does Karasami do with his father’s mortal remains? How does he counter the fraud being carried out by Panchavan Union Bank and its manager Muthu Selvan (Jayaram)? After giving up theft, what path does Karasami choose next? Does he ultimately fulfill his father’s last wish? What kind of help does he extend to the villagers? And in the end, does Karasami get caught by DSP Bharathan?All these questions can only be answered by watching the film in theatres.
Performances:
Dhanush has once again proven his acting prowess with a standout performance. With such strong impact, the film looks poised to emerge as a potential winner.
Suraj Venjaramoodu, Karunas, and Prithivi are given well-defined roles with ample scope, allowing their characters to stand out effectively. Other actors such as Ravikumar and Mamitha Baiju are alright in their given roles.
Analysis:
The film truly shines in its opening 10 minutes, the stretch leading into the interval, and the pre-climax portions.
Overall, this is a well-crafted heist thriller by director Vignesh Raja that’s worth experiencing on the big screen. A gripping thriller that stays true to its genre from start to finish.

The music and background score by G. V. Prakash Kumar serve as the lifeline of the film, elevating its emotional depth and overall impact.
The Cinematography by Theni Eswar is good as he presented the entire film on a rustic note which is required for films a rural gener.
Editing by Sreejith Sarang is slick and racy. The production values for this star studded project are lavish.
Verdict:
Altogether, KARA is an engaging period heist drama that has an equal amount of emotions and action. Dhanush ‘s performance is a major asset for the movie in addition director’s vision sums up the film a worthy watch during this weekend.
