Mareechika: A decent thriller (3/5)

A thriller titled, Mareechikar starring Viraj Ashwin,Regina CassandraAnupama Parameswaran in the key roles is out on May 29, 2026. Let’s Review Mareechikar.

Synopsis:

Venkatalaxmi (Anupama Parameswaran), a sincere college girl, silently harbors deep feelings for Sanjay alias Sanju (Viraj Ashwin). Though he comes from a politically influential family as the son of a corporator, Sanju values self-respect and independence, choosing to run his own coffee shop instead of relying on his father’s stature.

Despite being close to him, Venkatalaxmi never gathers the courage to express her love. During this phase, she befriends Mareechika (Regina Cassandra), an NRI who soon becomes a significant part of their lives. To Venkatalaxmi’s heartbreak, Mareechika and Sanju grow close and eventually tie the knot. However, their seemingly happy life takes a shocking turn when Mareechika murders Sanju under mysterious circumstances. Devastated and confused, Venkatalaxmi turns to the police in search of answers. What led Mareechika to commit such a drastic act? Who is she really, and what secrets is she hiding? The mystery surrounding these questions and the aftermath of Sanju’s death form the core of the story.

Performances:

The lead actors deliver commendable performances that suit their respective characters well. Regina Cassandra fits perfectly into the role of an NRI woman and carries the character with confidence and elegance.

Anupama Parameswaran shines in a soft and innocent role, bringing natural charm and emotional depth to her performance.

Meanwhile, Viraj Ashwin appears stylish on screen and does a convincing job in portraying his character with ease and sincerity. Ajay Ghosh is okay in his cop role which is fun coated.

Analysis:

The director deserves credit for attempting a film that breaks away from conventional storytelling patterns. With Mareechika, he tries to present a unique narrative that combines psychological drama, romance, and mystery elements in an intriguing manner.

The core concept of the film somewhat reminds one of 1: Nenokkadine starring Mahesh Babu, especially in the way the psychological aspects are explored. The movie manages to hold attention particularly during the interval sequence and the climactic portions.

The final stretch featuring Ajay Ghosh, Regina Cassandra, and Anupama Parameswaran is executed effectively and stands out as one of the better segments in the film. The scenes involving Ajay Ghosh’s character, in particular, bring some entertaining moments and generate good humor amidst the intense narrative.

On the flip side, one of the recurring problems with many tight-budget films is that they often start with an interesting concept but struggle with effective storytelling. Maricheeka too suffers from a similar drawback. While the core idea has enough intrigue to capture attention, the narration fails to elevate it in a compelling manner. When the storytelling lacks grip and clarity, even a promising concept loses its impact. The disappointment feels even stronger because the film genuinely tries to explore something different, but ultimately falls short of realizing its full potential.

Technical Department:

The music composed by Ilaiyaraaja is decent and blends well with the film’s mood, while the background score manages to elevate a few key sequences effectively. Aravind Kannabiran’s cinematography is visually neat and captures the film’s atmosphere adequately. The production values are respectable for the genre, though the editing could have been much tighter to make the narrative more engaging.

The story penned by Lakshmi Bhupala carries an interesting psychological thriller premise. However, the execution on screen doesn’t completely do justice to the idea. While certain sequences leave an impact and manage to engage the audience, a major portion of the film feels flat and lacks the intensity needed to sustain interest throughout.

Verdict:

Altogether, Mareechikar turns out to be a decent psychological thriller that struggles to fully capitalize on its promising premise. The film had the potential to engage audiences with its mix of psychological drama and mystery elements, but the execution lacks the necessary impact. Regina Cassandra, Anupama Parameswaran, and Viraj Ashwin deliver decent performances and do their part effectively. Though the film has a few issues with the pace, on the whole it will end up as a decent one time for the audience, who love this kind of psychological thrillers.
