Papam Pratap:  Entertaining in parts (2.5/5)

Starring Thiruveer and Payal Radhakrishna  as the lead pair, a film titled, Papam Pratap under the direction of S. P. Durga Naresh is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 17, 2026 but had paid premiers on April 16th . Let’s Review Papam Pratap.

Synopsis:

Set in the Godavari region in 1998, the story revolves around Pratap and his wife Bujjamma, whose marriage takes an unexpected turn within days, leading to a village-level conflict and emotional drama. The film opens with the introduction of Pratap (Thiruveer), a financially well-settled young man, marries his beloved Bujjamma (Payal Radhakrishna) despite his father’s (Ajay Ghosh) disapproval. As their married life progresses smoothly, Bujjamma discovers that Pratap is suffering from a strange health issue during his sleep. Unable to cope with it, she decides to leave him. What exactly is the problem Pratap is facing? Is there a solution to it? Do the couple eventually reunite or not? To find out, you need to watch the film.

Performances:

As an actor, Thiruveer is already well known to Telugu audiences for his versatility. He can easily adapt to any role, and in this film too, he impresses once again as Pratap a character blended with innocence. His performance and body language, especially in the first half, are quite engaging.

Veteran actor Ajay Ghosh, who plays the hero’s father, stands out as another major strength of the film. His irritation and frustration toward his son generate good comedy. In particular, some of the comedic scenes centered around him in the first half work well.

Along with these, a few emotional scenes here and there are decent. The rest of the supporting cast also perform well within the scope of their respective roles.

Analysis:

Although the mystery surrounding the hero’s problem creates some initial curiosity, once it is revealed, the reason why the heroine kept it hidden for so long doesn’t feel convincing in the narrative. The drama that unfolds around this point also makes the film feel stretched.

Especially, in the second half, although the director focuses on emotions and drama, none of it really works. Mainly, due to a lack of logic in the core point of the story, the audience fails to connect with it.
While Payal Radhakrishna delivers a good performance, her character could have been written with more depth. Similarly, the behavior of Ajay Ghosh’s character feels a bit odd in the second half. Also, if the hero’s health issue had been presented with more depth, the narrative would have worked much better.

Technical Department:

The production values of the film are quite decent. The overall setup, designed to suit the backdrop, looks neat and pleasant. The music by K. M. Radha Krishnan and the background score by Suresh Bobbili are satisfactory. Vishweshwar’s cinematography captures the village visuals effectively. However, the editing could have been handled with more care.

Coming to director S. P. Durga Nagesh, he has chosen an interesting story line. The comedy scenes and a few emotional moments he created around it work to an extent. However, he misses out on the required depth and logic that this storyline demands. If these aspects had been presented more effectively, the film would have turned out better.

Verdict:

Altogether, in Paapam Pratap, young actor Thiruveer and Ajay Ghosh impress with their performances. The film has an interesting core idea, and a few comedy scenes manage to evoke good laughs here and there. However, the narrative lacks depth and a certain level of seriousness.
As a result, the film ends up being a simple village drama that entertains in parts. So, you can give it a try keeping these aspects in mind.
